      I've test ridden the big brand ebikes on trails and couldn't justify the insane motorbike like costs, especially when I already have a sweet full sus bike I bought new in 2009! Did my research and came across the CYC Photon 2. Man, this thing has transformed my bike and given it a new lease on life! Torque sensing is incredible, you can have in Race 3 (very quick) and pedal lightly, the bike won't give much push. However, the split second you put power in it responds immediately, but in a very smooth and controlled way. It's very quiet and very well built - full anodized aluminum - looks the bees knees as well! I was a bit concerned about motor clearance as my Orange Five has a pretty low BB as is, but have had no dramas so far. Also love how you can use the thumb throttle to "top up" your pedal inputs, eg when in a tight spot on the trail stuck in a higher gear. On a TongSheng TSDZ I tried, using thumb throttle kills pedal assist straight away. IMO, this kit is better than the factory ebikes, and goes faster, too!

      CYC Photon Gen 2 Mid Drive eBike Conversion Kit

      I replaced a photon gen 1 with this motor as the gen 1 was getting sprag clutch slippage. Installing was very easy, because this motor uses the canbus system connectors for the display and wheel speed sensor/Bluetooth are different, triangular for the display and square for the speed sensor, the throttle connector from the gen 1 appears the same and works fine For some reason I received the longer crank kit for the 90mm bottom bracket, again no problem as the left bearing holder and isis crank from the gen 1 fitted fine. The sprag clutch on the gen 2 is larger 20x28 compared to 12x20. Motor is smooth, fairly quiet although the BBSHD is quieter, plenty of power, seems more economical on battery usage than the BBSHD, that would be the advantage of the torque sensor. The settings are easy to adjust with the display or using the ride app Interesting the speed cutoff and throttle speed limit can be set independently for street or race mode. I have it set so street mode defaults when first turned on, speed limit 25kph and 6kph for the throttle, couple of button presses turns on race mode for offroad use, speed cutoff and throttle can be set to whatever. I like how the motor just fades out when you go over the speed and doesn't appear to have much drag in pedaling, soon as you slow below the set speed the motor fades back in. It's very similar to the way a Bosch mid drive behaves.

      I chose the EPAC version of the Photon to keep me safe from the law while still having a decent amount of torque available for off road riding. I have it paired with a Rohloff and it's awesome so far. I haven't found a hill yet that it can't get me up, and it doesn't overheat! Fitting was a breeze. Much smaller and lighter than a BBSHD, and the torque sensor has a very natural feel so I feel like I am still riding a bicycle but fitter and stronger than I actually am. Service and support from Cap Rouge has been awesome, as usual. I can't recommend them enough.

      This Photon gen2 has oodles of smooth quiet power, very easy install, I bought my first Photon gen2 4 months ago for my dual suspension MTB, I am that impressed I had to have another in my possession - this 1 I'm setting up on a Merida hardtail MTB in the coming months for family or friends to ride with, the hardtail MTB will also give me a much larger battery space inside the frame for long distance rides.

      The Photon Gen 2 from Cap Rouge was easy to install with the right tools, the motor is quiet, smooth & very powerful straight out of the box without needing to make any settings changes, it eats uphill rock gardens for breakfast in mid power level 3, the chain line is straight, the gear changes are smooth, I'm totally satisfied with the Photon Gen 2, I keep my torque wrench & hex socket on the porch table, to sinch the cranks up to 55nm before each ride as they can loosen, buy a torque wrench & 8mm hex socket that fits the torque wrench for pre ride tightening of the cranks, easy!!! My Norco Fluid is now a rocket ship! Thanks to Cap Rouge!!

      Bought a new Marin Stinson 2 bike, mounted the photon motor and the 52v 20ah battery, kit is really simple to install. I like the SW102 display, small and tidy, still gives plenty of info and I can always use the phone app for more info. I did fit two extra rivnuts to compliment the two bottle cage mounts on the down tube for the battery mount. Only ridden the bike a few kilometres so far, will do more over the weekend, the motor, very quiet and smooth pickup, climbs steep hills no problemo. I picked this bike because it has pedal forward allows me to place my foot flat on the ground, I can step over the frame and it only has a single chain wheel so I didn't have to remove a front shifter and the cabling etc, the nine speed cassette has a wide range Will be adding hydraulic brakes, mudguards, lights and probably a rear rack as the frame has all the mount points for these.

      This is my third Photon upgrade over the last 12 months, so I am obviously very happy with the product and level of support from Cap Rouge. The previous two were MTBs for off-road use but this one is primarily a bike path and road cruiser/commuter. My advice would be to spend time with the CYC Ride App (which is excellent) setting up the bike to suit your personal riding style and preferences. If you just ‘turn it up to 11’ you won’t get the best riding experience (eg surging) or the most out of the flexibility that the kit can provide. There are excellent resources on line and on YouTube to help you with this. Once dialed in, you can pretty much forget about it and enjoy the ride!

      The installation was very straightforward, the downloaded manual is easy to follow. The hardest part is probably finding a neat way to run the cables. I got a 48v battery and because there is so much power on tap, I changed the rear sprocket by 2 teeth smaller. This bike has a Nexus 8 speed hub and I'm now running a 38/18 gearing. Before I started on this conversion, all the "experts" said that you can't fit a mid motor into a carbon fiber frame. Well, that's what this is and it fitted perfectly.

      I fitted a CYC Photon kit to a Surly Krampus (with 29x3” tyres) and couldn’t be happier with the result! Reasonably easy to install and the CYC app is very easy to use. Some good resources on YouTube to help. The motor is quieter than the Bosch CX Gen 3 on my Focus and delivers the power in a similarly smooth, progressive way. There is some slight surging when pedaling lightly, but this is a very minor issue and fixed by either turning down the boost, or pedaling harder! Based on excellent advice from Ben, I opted for a 34t chainring and this was definitely the right choice for the Krampus. Plenty of clearance but I’m not sure 36t would have worked. Certainly no larger. After getting the Focus, I hadn’t ridden the ‘acoustic’ Krampus much, but with the Photon kit it has been re-born and I’m loving riding it. Worth every penny, and I’m glad that I went with Cap Rouge for their excellent advice and support. Well done, team!

      Ive never built an E-bike before and this kit was pretty easy to install. The torque sensing is phenomenal and you can decide how much work you put in using the assit levels. I've put 400km on the bike since installing. Using a 52v 20ah pack I got over 100km of range on rough gravel tracks over a few windy days. Unrestricted mode is insane and you may feel the front wheel starting to lift as you pedal. Definitely recommend hydraulic disc brakes and good tyres as I guarantee you will end up going faster than you intend too!

      I’d done a fair amount of research into eBike conversion kits and landed on the CYC Photon for the balance of power, torque sensing and quality. Ben was super helpful confirming suitability for my build, an entry level mountain bike to do 90% commuting and 10% gravel and single track exploring. Ben shipped the order promptly and the motor bolted easily onto the 68mm bottom bracket. The Photon kit is super high quality and with the 34 tooth chainring gave me a perfect chainline on a 9 speed wide range cassette. Paired with a Cap Rouge 52v 17.5ah battery this build in race mode level 3 (pedaling and judicious use of throttle for hills) easily got me 75km range with an average speed of 30km/h from a full charge. I am super impressed with this motor and how well it performs. Well worth the cost and piece of mind with 2 years warranty.

      VERY happy with the cyc photon I fitted to my Jamis renagade S3 gravel bike with 10x2 gearing . The torque sensing is as instant and progressive as I hoped it would be . I've set the power levels at 150 , 300and 450 w . That's legal in NSW I believe . Level 1 gives me a nice boost , level 2 makes me feel like I'm 25 again ( a distant memory ) and level 3 I haven't used yet . CYC please give us a 2x option for chainrings . I've made a 34/50 chainring for this motor using a lathe and Dremel and a FSA chainring bought separately . Cheers Bob

      Motor performs very smoothly with its torque sensing. Recommend installing the brake lever sensors, as well. You want to avoid the motor fighting against the brakes in a fast stop situation, the brake sensors solves that.
